MARCH 1 ST 2020 SACRAMENTO RIVER FISHING REPORT
SACRAMENTO RIVER FISHING REPORT: Northern California Trout /Steelhead fishing has been producing some great days of fishing in the Redding CA area. The lower Sac river has a strong population of big bodied Wild Rainbow Trout. You will be hard pressed to find a river that can compete with the Lower Sac River. The angling pressure remains low in most sections of the sac river. What makes the Sacramento River the best year around trout stream?? The creation of the Shasta Dam/ Keswick Dam just below Shasta Dam. These dams were built in the 1940s. the Bureau of Reclamation precisely controls the water temperature of the outflow. The TCD pulls water from different depths of Shasta lake in order to ensure optimum temperatures for spawning Chinook Salmon and there offspring. They keep the temperature coming out of Shasta dam at a chilly 51 to 55 degrees. The Sacramento River is the only river with four distinct runs of Chinook Salmon/Fall, late Fall, Winter run, and the Spring run king Salmon. The winter run king Salmon was nearly extinct before the completion of TCD, THE WINTER RUN KING SALMON ON THE SACRAMENTO RIVER reached as low as 186 returning in 1994. In 2003 there were more then 9,000 Winter run King Salmon returning. The cold water from the TCD improved the Salmon returns and defiantly made the Sacramento River aquatic insect hatches improve in a big way. This is what making this such a great Trout/king Salmon fishery. Spring time is my favorite time to fish for Wild Rainbow Trout. We are seeing 25 to 30 fish days on every outing. We get some real big bows that you don’t see much until this time of year on the SAC RIVER.
SPRING TIME: The trees turn green and start budding. The Trout ,Pike-minnows ,Suckers and King Salmon are spawning in the river. Just not in the same numbers as we see in the Fall run. So using a yellow egg pattern to match the trout egg and the sucker egg will keep the action coming. Side drifting small eggs from our 26’ tiller boat is a nice way to relax, with friends and family, and catch lots of wild Rainbow Trout. This is a catch and release area. We do have sections that are just as good that you are able to keep fish for dinner. If its Fly Fishing you want to do we are set for that too. Spring time we often see a lot of pmd ,and the caddis on sunny days. We do all our Fly Fishing trips out of a 17-60 Willie Drift boat that is custom built just for Fly fishing and comfort. The flows on the Sacramento river are 5540 cfs as of 03-01-2020. This is perfect flows for fishing. SHASTA LAKE is 30 feet from the top so we have plenty of water for Trout fishing and King Salmon fishing for 2020. so look no further and come fish the Lower Sacramento River this year. No need to go to Montana or Alaska to find good Trout Fishing and King Salmon Fishing!! We have it right here in Northern California. Remember we will book your trip in the peak of each season that is happing. Feel free to give me a call @530-917-5619 for more recent photos and reports go to my Instagram or Facebook
